Fourier Analysis of Hubble Space Telescope Fine Guidance Sensor Data of Binary Stars and Application to the Multiple System HD 157948 A Fourier-based method is presented for the analysis of binary andmultiple star data taken with the Hubble Space Telescope Fine GuidanceSensors (FGSs). Relative astrometry and magnitude differences areobtained as with standard FGS analysis techniques, and although the FGSsystem is essentially unfiltered, this method also permits thecharacterization of color differences between components of binary ormultiple star systems based on the wavelength dependence of theinterference fringes produced by the instrument. Using the multiplesystem HD 157948, we show that the method produces astrometric andphotometric measurements that are consistent with previous FGS analysisfor the three components that lie within the field of view of FGS andgives color differences relative to the primary for two of the threeknown companions. Speckle observations of the system with the WIYN 3.5 mtelescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory are also presented, which,in combination with the FGS results and other data available in theliterature, permit B-V colors and absolute V magnitudes to be obtainedof all four components in the system. Their colors and magnitudes areplotted on the H-R diagram, and a comparison with theoretical isochronesindicates that the results are consistent with theory for a relativelyyoung, somewhat metal-poor system.Based on observations made with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, obtained at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which is operated bythe Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., underNASA contract NAS5-26555.
| The Mass Ratio Distribution in Main-Sequence Spectroscopic Binaries Measured by Infrared Spectroscopy We report infrared spectroscopic observations of a large well-definedsample of main-sequence, single-lined spectroscopic binaries to detectthe secondaries and derive the mass ratio distribution of short-periodbinaries. The sample consists of 51 Galactic disk spectroscopic binariesfound in the Carney and Latham high proper motion survey, with primarymasses in the range 0.6-0.85 Msolar. Our infraredobservations detect the secondaries in 32 systems, two of which havemass ratios, q=M2/M1, as low as ~0.20. Togetherwith 11 systems previously identified as double-lined binaries byvisible light spectroscopy, we have a complete sample of 62 binaries, ofwhich 43 are double lined. The mass ratio distribution is approximatelyconstant over the range q=1.0-0.3. The distribution appears to rise atlower q values, but the uncertainties are sufficiently large that wecannot rule out a distribution that remains constant. The massdistribution derived for the secondaries in our sample and that of theextrasolar planets apparently represent two distinct populations.
| On the Mass-Ratio Distribution of Spectroscopic Binaries In this paper we derive the mass-ratio and secondary-mass distributionsof a large, well-defined, complete sample of 129 spectroscopic binarieswith periods between 1 and 2500 days. The binaries, whose orbits werepublished recently, were detected by a systematic radial-velocity surveyof a sample of more than 1400 large proper motion stars. Three featuresstand out in the mass-ratio distribution: a rise as the mass ratio goesdown to q~0.2, a sharp drop below q~0.2, and a smaller peak at q~0.8.Another way to characterize the results is to state that thedistribution includes two ``populations,'' one with a high asymmetricpeak at q~0.2 and another with a smaller peak at q~0.8, while theminimum between the two populations is centered at q~0.55. The size ofthe binary sample allows us to divide it into two subsamples and lookfor differences in the mass-ratio distributions of the two subsamples. We performed two different divisions: one into Galactic halo versus diskpopulations, and the other into high- and low-mass primary stars (aboveand below 0.67 Msolar). The former division yieldsdifferences with moderate statistical significance of 88%, while thelatter is more significant at a level of 97%. Our analysis suggests thatthe rise toward low mass ratios does not appear in the mass-ratiodistribution of the halo binaries. The other separation shows a broadpeak at mass ratio of q~0.8-1 for the subsample of binaries withlow-mass primaries but no corresponding peak in the subsample withhigh-mass primaries. We discuss our findings and their application totheories of binary formation.
| High-Precision Near-Infrared Photometry of a Large Sample of Bright Stars Visible from the Northern Hemisphere We present the results of 8 yr of infrared photometric monitoring of alarge sample of stars visible from Teide Observatory (Tenerife, CanaryIslands). The final archive is made up of 10,949 photometric measuresthrough a standard InSb single-channel photometer system, principally inJHK, although some stars have measures in L'. The core of this list ofstars is the standard-star list developed for the Carlos SánchezTelescope. A total of 298 stars have been observed on at least twooccasions on a system carefully linked to the zero point defined byVega. We present high-precision photometry for these stars. The medianuncertainty in magnitude for stars with a minimum of four observationsand thus reliable statistics ranges from 0.0038 mag in J to 0.0033 magin K. Many of these stars are faint enough to be observable with arraydetectors (42 are K>8) and thus to permit a linkage of the bright andfaint infrared photometric systems. We also present photometry of anadditional 25 stars for which the original measures are no longeravailable, plus photometry in L' and/or M of 36 stars from the mainlist. We calculate the mean infrared colors of main-sequence stars fromA0 V to K5 V and show that the locus of the H-K color is linearlycorrelated with J-H. The rms dispersion in the correlation between J-Hand H-K is 0.0073 mag. We use the relationship to interpolate colors forall subclasses from A0 V to K5 V. We find that K and M main-sequence andgiant stars can be separated on the color-color diagram withhigh-precision near-infrared photometry and thus that photometry canallow us to identify potential mistakes in luminosity classclassification.
| Oxygen line formation in late-F through early-K disk/halo stars. Infrared O I triplet and [O I] lines In order to investigate the formation of O I 7771-5 and [O I] 6300/6363lines, extensive non-LTE calculations for neutral atomic oxygen werecarried out for wide ranges of model atmosphere parameters, which areapplicable to early-K through late-F halo/disk stars of variousevolutionary stages. The formation of the triplet O I lines was found to be well described bythe classical two-level-atom scattering model, and the non-LTEcorrection is practically determined by the parameters of theline-transition itself without any significant relevance to the detailsof the oxygen atomic model. This simplifies the problem in the sensethat the non-LTE abundance correction is essentially determined only bythe line-strength (Wlambda ), if the atmospheric parametersof Teff, log g, and xi are given, without any explicitdependence of the metallicity; thus allowing a useful analytical formulawith tabulated numerical coefficients. On the other hand, ourcalculations lead to the robust conclusion that LTE is totally valid forthe forbidden [O I] lines. An extensive reanalysis of published equivalent-width data of O I 7771-5and [O I] 6300/6363 taken from various literature resulted in theconclusion that, while a reasonable consistency of O I and [O I]abundances was observed for disk stars (-1 <~ [Fe/H] <~ 0), theexistence of a systematic abundance discrepancy was confirmed between OI and [O I] lines in conspicuously metal-poor halo stars (-3 <~[Fe/H] <~ -1) without being removed by our non-LTE corrections, i.e.,the former being larger by ~ 0.3 dex at -3 <~ [Fe/H] <~ -2.An inspection of the parameter-dependence of this discordance indicatesthat the extent of the discrepancy tends to be comparatively lessenedfor higher Teff/log g stars, suggesting the preference ofdwarf (or subgiant) stars for studying the oxygen abundances ofmetal-poor stars.Tables 2, 5, and 7 are only available in electronic form, at the CDS viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/402/343 and Table\ref{tab3} is only available in electronic form athttp://www.edpsciences.org
| Physical Parameters of the Metal-Poor Binary System HD 157948 The metal-poor star HD 157948 ([Fe/H] = -0.75]) has been identified byLatham et al. (1992, A.J., 104, 774) as a doubled-lined spectroscopicbinary with a period of 446.7 days. We have observed this star 5 timesusing the FGS on the Hubble Space Telescope as part of a program todetermine the masses and luminosities of Population II stars. The FGSobservations resolve HD 157948 into a triple-star system, with a closepair that corresponds to the spectroscopic double and wide faintercomponent. The tight inner pair has a projected orbit with a semi-majoraxis of 20 mas and exhibits orbital motion consistent with the perioddetermined from the spectroscopic observations. This pair has amagnitude difference of 0.4 as measured through the F583W filter on theFGS. The faint, distant component is 280 mas from the primary star andis 2.3 magnitudes fainter. The wide componet has also been resolved atseveral wavelengths using the WIYN telescope. In this paper we presentthe physical parameters for the tight pair derived from a preliminaryanalysis of the HST astrometry combined with the radial velocity datafrom the literature. This work is based on observations made with theNASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, obtained at the Space Telescope ScienceInstitute, which is operated by the Association of Universities forResearch in Astronomy, Inc., under NASA contract NAS 5-26555. Theseobservations are associated with proposal # 9034.
| A Survey of Proper-Motion Stars. XV. Orbital Solutions for 34 Double-lined Spectroscopic Binaries We present orbital solutions for 34 double-lined spectroscopic binariesfound in the Carney-Latham sample of 1464 stars selected for high propermotion. We use TODCOR, a two-dimensional correlation technique, toextract the velocities for the primary and secondary stars and theirlight ratio. For our single-order echelle spectra, obtained with theCenter for Astrophysics Digital Speedometers, we find that we can reachsecondaries that are as much as 2 mag fainter than their primaries. Theratio of the primary to secondary velocity residuals from the orbitalfit equals approximately the secondary-to-primary light ratio, as wouldbe expected for the photon-limited case. We use our mass and lightratios to evaluate the mass-luminosity relation for metal-poormain-sequence dwarfs in the mass range 0.55-0.8 Msolar. Weassume an L~Mβ relation and find that the exponentat around 5200 Å is 7.4+/-0.6. We find this is in good agreementwith the slope of the corresponding theoretical MV-M 14Gyr isochrones from the VandenBerg & Bell models for metal-poorstars. Some of the results presented here used observations made withthe Multiple Mirror Telescope, a facility operated jointly by theUniversity of Arizona and the Smithsonian Institution.
| CCD measurements of visual double stars made with the 74 cm and 50 cm refractors of the Nice Observatory (2nd series) We present 619 measurements of 606 visual double stars made by CCDimaging from 1996 to 1999 with the 74 cm and 50 cm refractors of theNice observatory. Angular separation, position angle and magnitudedifference are given. Magnitude differences estimated from CCD imagesare compared with magnitude differences given in the Hipparcos catalog. The residuals in angular separation and position angle are computed forbinaries with known orbit. | The Near-Ultraviolet Continuum of Late-Type Stars Analyses of the near-ultraviolet continuum of late-type stars have ledto controversial results regarding the performance of state-of-the-artmodel atmospheres. The release of the homogeneous InternationalUltraviolet Explorer (IUE) final archive and the availability of thehigh-accuracy Hipparcos parallaxes provide an opportunity to revisitthis issue, as accurate stellar distances make it possible to compareobserved absolute fluxes with the predictions of model atmospheres. Thenear-UV continuum is highly sensitive to Teff and [Fe/H], andonce the gravity is constrained from the parallax, these parameters maybe derived from the analysis of low-dispersion, long-wavelength(2000-3000 Å) IUE spectra for stars previously studied by Alonso,Arribas, & Martínez-Roger using the Infrared Flux Method(IRFM). A second comparison is carried out against the starsspectroscopically investigated by Gratton, Carretta, & Castelli. Itis shown that there is a good agreement between Teff valuesobtained from the IRFM and those from the near-UV continuum, and aremarkable correspondence between observed and synthetic fluxes forstars with 4000 K<=Teff<=6000 K of any metallicity andgravity. These facts suggest that model atmospheres provide an adequatedescription of the near-UV continuum forming region and that theopacities involved are essentially understood.
| Two-colour photometry for 9473 components of close Hipparcos double and multiple stars Using observations obtained with the Tycho instrument of the ESAHipparcos satellite, a two-colour photometry is produced for componentsof more than 7 000 Hipparcos double and multiple stars with angularseparations 0.1 to 2.5 arcsec. We publish 9473 components of 5173systems with separations above 0.3 arcsec. The majority of them did nothave Tycho photometry in the Hipparcos catalogue. The magnitudes arederived in the Tycho B_T and V_T passbands, similar to the Johnsonpassbands. Photometrically resolved components of the binaries withstatistically significant trigonometric parallaxes can be put on an HRdiagram, the majority of them for the first time. Based on observationsmade with the ESA Hipparcos satellite.
| Oxygen abundance in halo stars from O i triplet Oxygen abundance for 14 halo stars through the O I 7774 Ätriplethave been derived from high resolution spectra (R = 25,000; S/N >100) obtained with echelle-spectrometer of 6-m telescope of SpecialAstrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Theeffective temperature, metallicity and other parameters have beenexamined. For example, the effective temperature was found from H_alphaline wings and photometric indices. The abundance analysis was carriedout using both LTE and non-LTE conceptions. For this aim, we havespecified the oxygen atomic model. The average [O/Fe] value appeared tobe 0.61 +/- 0.21 from the non-LTE determination. A trend of oxygenabundance increasing along with the iron abundance decreasing was found. The relation between [O/Fe] and [Fe/H] is linear:[O/Fe]=-0.370x[Fe/H]+0.047. In addition to the sample of our programstars, we also involved in the analysis, 24 targets from Cavallo et al.(\cite{Cav}). For their original results we have determined thenecessary non-LTE corrections. Our data are compared with the results ofother works (Tomkin et al., \cite{Tom}; King & Boesgaard,\cite{King2}; Boesgaard et al. \cite{BK2}).

| Lithium abundances in metal-poor stars. I. New observations We present the lithium measurements of a continuing programme of lightelement abundances in metal-poor stars. New equivalent widths of the Lii lambda 670.8 nm resonance line in 67 metal-poor stars covering themetallicity range -3.5 <= [Fe/H] <= -0.4 are reported. For abouthalf of this sample, the observations presented here represent the firstmeasurement of the Li i line. The sample allowed a statisticalcomparison with previous measurements from other authors and a study ofthe consistency and reliability of the quoted error bars. This papershows that for most of the stars these error bars are good estimates ofthe true uncertainties associated with the determination of theequivalent widths of the Li i line. However, about 20% of the stars withtwo or more independent measurements show discrepancies in the Li iequivalent widths; in these cases, other sources of uncertainty notproperly taken into account (binarity effects, cosmic rays, imperfectflat-field correction, continuum determination, etc.) could also beimportant. Conclusions on the possible lithium abundance trends versuseffective temperature or metallicity and on any intrinsic scatter shouldbe treated cautiously until their robustness vis-a-vis these additionaluncertainties is proved. Based on observations made with the IsaacNewton and Nordic Optical Telescopes, which are operated on the islandof La Palma by the Isaac Newton Group and the NOT ScientificAssociation, respectively, in the Spanish Observatorio del Roque de losMuchachos of the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias.
| Chromospheric CaII H and K emission among subdwarfs Echelle spectra have been obtained of the CaII H and K lines for asample of metal-poor subdwarf stars as well as for a number of nearbyPopulation I dwarfs selected from among those included in the MountWilson HK survey. The main conclusion of this paper is that CaII H- andK-line emission does occur among subdwarfs. It is particularly notableamong those subdwarfs with colours of B-V>=0.75 all such starsobserved exhibit chromospheric emission, although emission is observedamong some subdwarfs bluer than this colour. The CaII K emission profilein most subdwarfs exhibits an asymmetry of V/R>1, similar to thatseen in the integrated light of the solar disc. Two quantitativeindicators of the contrast between the peaks in the emission profile andthe neighbouring photospheric line profile are introduced. Measurementsof these indicators show that the level of CaII emission among thesubdwarfs is similar to that among low-activity Population I dwarfs.
| ROSAT all-sky survey observations of PopII field binaries: X-ray activity of old, metal-poor stellar coronae. This study represents the first X-ray observations of an extended sampleof Pop II field binaries, aimed at investigating the properties of old,metal-poor stellar coronae. Analysing X-ray observations from the ROSATall-sky survey, we detected only 13 (out of 86) Pop II systems (15%detection rate). The X-ray luminosity function, taking into account bothdetections and upper limits, has its median at logL_x_<=28.1erg/s,indicating a low average X-ray luminosity, with a high-luminosity tailat logL_x_~29-31erg/s. The only extreme metal-poor system detected is HD89499. Thus, the detection rate of extreme Pop II systems is lower thanof intermediate Pop II, possibly indicating extreme Pop II to betypically less luminous. The X-ray luminosity is not very wellcorrelated with orbital period; long-period Pop II binaries may havehigh X-ray luminosities and, surprisingly, short-period systems are notper se strong X-ray emitters. For a subsample of emission-line Pop IIbinaries, i.e. the halo component analogs to the RS CVn binaries, themedian X-ray luminosity is at least one order of magnitude lower thanfor the RS CVns. The lower activity levels of the Pop II systems may becaused in part by the presence of fewer evolved stars in the sample andlower metallicity. The extremely old age of Pop II binaries may alsogive rise to the unexpectedly low X-ray luminosities of some systems(e.g., CD-481741, BD+53080).

| Determination of effective temperatures for an extended sample of dwarfs and subdwarfs (F0-K5). We have applied the InfraRed Flux Method (IRFM) to a sample of 475dwarfs and subdwarfs in order to derive their effective temperatureswith a mean accuracy of about 1.5%. We have used the new homogeneousgrid of theoretical model atmosphere flux distributions developed byKurucz (1991, 1993) for the application of the IRFM. The atmosphericparameters of the stars cover, roughly, the ranges:3500K<=T_eff_<=8000K -3.5<=[Fe/H]<=+0.53.5<=log(g)<=5. The monocromatic infrared fluxes at the continuum, and the bolometric fluxes are derived using recent results, whichsatisfy the accuracy requeriments of the work. Photometric calibrationshave been revised and applied to estimate metallicities, although directspectroscopic determinations were preferred when available. The adoptedinfrared absolute flux calibration, based on direct optical measurementsof angular stellar diameters, sets the effective temperatures determinedusing the IRFM on the same scale than those obtained by direct methods. We derive three temperatures, T_J_, T_H_ and T_K_, for each star usingthe monochromatic fluxes at different infrared wavelengths in thephotometric bands J, H, and K. They show good consistency over 4000 K,and no trend with wavelength may be appreciated. We provide a detaileddescription of the steps followed for the application of the IRFM, aswell as the sources of the errors associated to the different inputs ofthe method, and their transmission into the final temperatures. We alsoprovide comparison with previous works.

| Broad band JHK infrared photometry of an extended sample of late type dwarfs and subdwarfs. The results of a long term programme of broad band JHK photometry, for asample of 360 late type stars, made at the Observatorio del Teide(Tenerife, Spain) are presented. Transformations between thesemagnitudes and those of several currently used systems (CIT (Elias etal. 1982 and Carney 1983), Johnson (Johnson 1966, and Lee 1970), and ESO(Bouchet et al. 1991)) are proposed. A comparison to the narrow-bandsystem of Selby et al. (1988) has been made, in order to check theaccuracy of the photometric system. A mean internal accuracy better than0.02mag in the three bands can be inferred from the comparison to thelarge number of stars in common with Carney (1983), and from thedispersion of the multiple measured stars. The list of standards, thefilter passbands and effective wavelengths, together with correlationsbetween the extinction coefficients, ultimately characterize thephotometric IR system of the Observatorio del Teide (TCS). Data ofcomparable quality previously published have been added in order tocomplete the sample. This way the final sample consists of 550 stars. From the analysis of optical and IR colour:colour diagrams, we maydeduce that the range F0-K0 is properly sampled for0.1>[Fe/H]>-3.0. In the range K0-M4, no reliable photometricestimates of metallicity can be assigned, and only a small number ofstars have spectroscopic determination of the metallicity. Nevertheless, after kinematical considerations, the stars in this spectral range arealso expected to sample the galactic populations of dwarfs. Themetallicity effects on the IR and optical colour:colour diagrams arebriefly discussed.
| A survey of proper motion stars. 12: an expanded sample We report new photometry and radial velocities for almost 500 stars fromthe Lowell Proper Motion Catalog. We combine these results with ourprior sample and rederive stellar temperatures based on the photometry, reddening, metallicities (using chi squared matching of our 22,500 lowSignal to Noise (S/N) high resolution echelle spectra with a grid ofsynthetic spectra), distances, space motions, and Galactic orbitalparameters for 1269 (kinematics) and 1261 (metallicity) of the 1464stars in the complete survey. The frequency of spectroscopic binariesfor the metal-poor ((m/H) less than or equal to -1.2) stars with periodsshorter than 3000 days is at least 15%. The spectroscopic binaryfrequency for metal-rich stars ((m/H) greater than -0.5) appears to belower, about 9%, but this may be a selection effect. We also discussspecial classes of stars, including treatment of the double-linedspectroscopic binaries, and identification of subgiants. Four possiblenew members of the class of field blue stragglers are noted. We pointout the detection of three possible new white dwarfs, six broad-lined(binary) systems, and discuss briefly the three already knownnitrogen-rich halo dwarfs. The primary result of this paper will beavailable on CD-ROM, in the form of a much larger table.
| A survey of proper motion stars. XI - Orbits for the second 40 spectroscopic binaries Orbital solutions and spectroscopic metallicities for a second set of 40spectroscopic binaries found in an extended version of the Carney andLatham survey of proper-motion stars are reported. To investigate thedistribution of orbital eccentricity versus period for a pure sample ofhalo binaries, only those systems more metal poor than m/H = -1.6 areselected. The transition between circular and eccentric orbits is foundto occur at a period of about 19 d. This supports the interpretationthat tidal circularization has been more important on the main sequencethan during the premain-sequence stage for the sample of old binaries inthe halo.
| A survey of proper-motion stars. III - Reddenings, distances, and metallicities Further data on the Lowell proper-motion stars surveyed by Carney andLatham (1987) are presented. Both new and published photometry aresummarized for 286 of these stars. Included are R-I data for 64 stars, uvby (or by) data for 221 stars (of which are included new results for152 stars), and JHK (or K) data for 238 stars (of which are included newresults for 180 stars). The procedures used to estimate the reddeningand photometric parallax of each star are discussed. The metallicitiesfor 818 stars, based on 5795 spectra, determined using a new method, described in an earlier paper, which compares synthetic spectra to thelow-signal-to-noise spectra obtained for radial velocities are alsopresented. The reddening, distance, and metallicity are interdependentand have been determined in a self-consistent manner.
| A survey of proper-motion stars. II - Extracting metallicities from high-resolution, low-S/N spectra Calculations of a grid of high-resolution synthetic spectra coveringwavelengths 5150-5250 A, Teff 4750-6500 K, metal abundances from +0.5 to-3.0, and gravities of log g = 4.5 or 4.0 are discussed. Metallicitiesfor 48 stars whose abundances have been previously determined fromhigh-resolution, high-S/N spectra and conventional fine-analysistechniques are estimated. None of the observed spectra are high S/N, yetthey result in metallicities with internal scatter of typically 0.1 dex.Comparison with published fine analyses shows excellent agreement (-0.03plus or minus 0.02 dex) for metal-poor stars, and a small systematicerror at higher abundances, which is easily corrected.
| A survey of proper-motion stars. I - UBV photometry and radial velocities The background, motivation, and goals of a photometric and spectroscopicsurvey of over 900 stars selected from the Lowell Proper Motion Surveywithout any metallicity bias are discussed, and 1225 new UBV measures of867 stars with V = 7-16 mag, and a new mean radial velocities for 914stars based on 5815 high-resolution spectra are presented. Theradial-velocity data indicate the binary fraction of th high-velocitystars probably exceeds 25 percent.
