New magnetic field measurements of ? Cephei stars and slowly pulsating B stars We present the results of the continuation of our magnetic survey withFORS 1 at the VLT of a sample of B-type stars consisting of confirmed orcandidate ? Cephei stars and Slowly Pulsating B (hereafter SPB)stars, along with a small number of normal B-type stars. A weak meanlongitudinal magnetic field of the order of a few hundred Gauss wasdetected in three ? Cephei stars and two stars suspected to be ?Cephei stars, in five SPB stars and eight stars suspected to be SPBstars. Additionally, a longitudinal magnetic field at a level largerthan 3? has been diagnosed in two normal B-type stars, thenitrogen-rich early B-type star HD 52089 and in the B5 IV star HD153716. Roughly one third of ? Cephei stars have detected magneticfields: Out of 13 ? Cephei stars studied to date with FORS 1, fourstars possess weak magnetic fields, and out of the sample of sixsuspected ? Cephei stars two show a weak magnetic field. Thefraction of magnetic SPBs and candidate SPBs is found to be higher:Roughly half of the 34 SPB stars have been found to be magnetic andamong the 16 candidate SPBs eight stars possess magnetic fields. In anattempt to understand why only a fraction of pulsating stars exhibitmagnetic fields, we studied the position of magnetic and non-magneticpulsating stars in the H-R diagram. We find that their domains in theH-R diagram largely overlap, and no clear picture emerges as to thepossible evolution of the magnetic field across the main sequence. It ispossible that stronger fields tend to be found in stars with lowerpulsating frequencies and smaller pulsating amplitudes. A somewhatsimilar trend is found if we consider a correlation between the fieldstrength and the v sin i-values, i.e. stronger magnetic fields tend tobe found in more slowly rotating stars.Based on observations obtained at the European Southern Observatory,Paranal, Chile (ESO programmes 078.D-0140(A), 078.D-0330(A),079.D-0241(A), and 080.D-0383(A)).

| A Photometric and Spectroscopic Study of 3 Vulpeculae: An Observer's Nightmare We describe photometry of 3 Vulpeculae obtained with the Four CollegeAutomated Photoelectric Telescope and spectroscopy obtained with the1.22 m telescope of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory. We haveanalyzed differential uvby photometric observations obtained over 7 yr.Three main frequencies (f1=0.9719, f2=0.7923, andf3=0.8553 cycles day-1) were found, as well as asum frequency (f1+f2=1.76420 cyclesday-1). A study of the photographic region usinghigh-dispersion spectrograms obtained with a Reticon detector at thecoudé spectrograph confirms the variable nature of 3 Vul as a 53Persei star and indicates that the star's abundances are normal formain-sequence band B stars. The new spectra were combined with thosepreviously published to confirm an orbital period very close to 1 yr.Finally, comparison with models yielded both a mass (4.16Msolar) and an age (25 Myr), and a mass range for thecompanion (0.6-1.1 Msolar). With an orbital period of almost1 yr and a pulsation period of almost 1 day, this star is indeed anobserver's nightmare.
| On the behavior of the Cii 4267.261, 6578.052 and 6582.882 Å lines in chemically peculiar and standard stars With the aim of investigating the possible particular behavior of carbonin a sample of chemically peculiar stars of the main sequence withoutturning to modeling, we performed spectroscopic observations of threeimportant and usually prominent single ionized carbon lines: 4267.261,6578.052 and 6582.882 Å. In addition, we observed a large numberof standard stars in order to define a kind of normality strip, usefulfor comparing the observed trend for the peculiar stars. We paidparticular attention to the problem of the determination of fundamentalatmospheric parameters, especially for the chemically peculiar stars forwhich the abundance anomalies change the flux distribution in such a waythat the classical photometric methods to infer effective temperaturesand gravities parameter cannot be applied. Regarding CP stars, we founda normal carbon abundance in Hg-Mn, Si (with some exceptions) and Hestrong stars. He weak stars are normal too, but with a large spread outof the data around the mean value. A more complicated behavior has beennoted in the group of SrCrEu stars: four out of seven show a strongoverabundance, being the others normal.
| Influence of non-adiabatic temperature variations on line profile variations of slowly rotating beta Cephei stars and SPBs. II. Simulations of line profile time series We investigate to what extent non-adiabatic temperature variations atthe surface of slowly rotating non-radially pulsating beta Cephei starsand slowly pulsating B stars affect silicon line profile variations. Weuse the non-adiabatic amplitudes of the effective temperature andgravity variation presented in Dupret et al. (\cite{Dupret02}), togetherwith a Kurucz intensity grid, to compute time series of line profilevariations. Our simulations point out that the line shapes do not changesignificantly due to temperature variations. We find equivalent widthvariations of at most two percent of the mean equivalent width. Weconfront our results with observational equivalent width variations andwith photometrically obtained effective temperature variations. Based onobservations obtained with the Swiss photometric telescope and with theESO/CAT telescope, at La Silla in Chile.
| The proper motions of fundamental stars. I. 1535 stars from the Basic FK5 A direct combination of the positions given in the HIPPARCOS cataloguewith astrometric ground-based catalogues having epochs later than 1939allows us to obtain new proper motions for the 1535 stars of the BasicFK5. The results are presented as the catalogue Proper Motions ofFundamental Stars (PMFS), Part I. The median precision of the propermotions is 0.5 mas/year for mu alpha cos delta and 0.7mas/year for mu delta . The non-linear motions of thephotocentres of a few hundred astrometric binaries are separated intotheir linear and elliptic motions. Since the PMFS proper motions do notinclude the information given by the proper motions from othercatalogues (HIPPARCOS, FK5, FK6, etc.) this catalogue can be used as anindependent source of the proper motions of the fundamental stars.Catalogue (Table 3) is only available at the CDS via anonymous ftp tocdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strastg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/365/222
| Sixth Catalogue of Fundamental Stars (FK6). Part I. Basic fundamental stars with direct solutions The FK6 is a suitable combination of the results of the HIPPARCOSastrometry satellite with ground-based data, measured over more than twocenturies and summarized in the FK5. Part I of the FK6 (abbreviatedFK6(I)) contains 878 basic fundamental stars with direct solutions. Suchdirect solutions are appropriate for single stars or for objects whichcan be treated like single stars. From the 878 stars in Part I, we haveselected 340 objects as "astrometrically excellent stars", since theirinstantaneous proper motions and mean (time-averaged) ones do not differsignificantly. Hence most of the astrometrically excellent stars arewell-behaving "single-star candidates" with good astrometric data. Thesestars are most suited for high-precision astrometry. On the other hand,199 of the stars in Part I are Δμ binaries in the sense ofWielen et al. (1999). Many of them are newly discovered probablebinaries with no other hitherto known indication of binarity. The FK6gives, besides the classical "single-star mode" solutions (SI mode),other solutions which take into account the fact that hidden astrometricbinaries among "apparently single-stars" introduce sizable "cosmicerrors" into the quasi-instantaneously measured HIPPARCOS proper motionsand positions. The FK6 gives in addition to the SI mode the "long-termprediction (LTP) mode" and the "short-term prediction (STP) mode". TheseLTP and STP modes are on average the most precise solutions forapparently single stars, depending on the epoch difference with respectto the HIPPARCOS epoch of about 1991. The typical mean error of anFK6(I) proper motion in the single-star mode is 0.35 mas/year. This isabout a factor of two better than the typical HIPPARCOS errors for thesestars of 0.67 mas/year. In the long-term prediction mode, in whichcosmic errors are taken into account, the FK6(I) proper motions have atypical mean error of 0.50 mas/year, which is by a factor of more than 4better than the corresponding error for the HIPPARCOS values of 2.21mas/year (cosmic errors included).
| On the HIPPARCOS photometry of chemically peculiar B, A, and F stars The Hipparcos photometry of the Chemically Peculiar main sequence B, A,and F stars is examined for variability. Some non-magnetic CP stars,Mercury-Manganese and metallic-line stars, which according to canonicalwisdom should not be variable, may be variable and are identified forfurther study. Some potentially important magnetic CP stars are noted.Tables 1, 2, and 3 are available only in electronic form at the CDS viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html
| A spectroscopic study of some suspected chemically peculiar stars Time-resolved spectra in the 410 - 700 nm range have been obtained toinvestigate 10 stars which are classified as suspected chemicallypeculiar stars in The General Catalogue of Ap and Am stars by Renson etal. (1991) or in the latest literature. Among the studied stars, HD20629presents metal abundances which are significantly different from mainsequence star values and it should be classified as Silicon star. Fromthe Hei587.6 nm line, we conclude that HD35575 is a helium weak star.Because of the found radial velocity variability and the derivedabundances, the periodic photometric variable HD38602 could be anellipsoidal variable.
| The observed periods of AP and BP stars A catalogue of all the periods up to now proposed for the variations ofCP2, CP3, and CP4 stars is presented. The main identifiers (HD and HR),the proper name, the variable-star name, and the spectral type andpeculiarity are given for each star as far as the coordinates at 2000.0and the visual magnitude. The nature of the observed variations (light, spectrum, magnetic field, etc.) is presented in a codified way. Thecatalogue is arranged in three tables: the bulk of the data, i.e. thosereferring to CP2, CP3, and CP4 stars, are given in Table 1, while thedata concerning He-strong stars are given in Table 2 and those foreclipsing or ellipsoidal variables are collected in Table 3. Notes arealso provided at the end of each table, mainly about duplicities. Thecatalogue contains data on 364 CP stars and is updated to 1996, October31. This research has made use of the SIMBAD database, operated at CDS,Strasbourg, France.
| Study of an unbiased sample of B stars observed with Hipparcos: the discovery of a large amount of new slowly pulsating B stars We present a classification of 267 new variable B-type stars discoveredby Hipparcos. We have used two different classification schemes and theyboth result in only a few new beta Cephei stars, a huge number of newslowly pulsating B stars, quite some supergiants with alpha Cyg-typevariations and variable CP stars, and further some new periodic Be starsand eclipsing binaries. Our results clearly point out the biased naturetowards short-period variables of earlier, ground-based surveys ofvariable stars. The position of the new beta Cephei stars and slowlypulsating B stars in the HR diagram is determined by means of Genevaphotometry and is confronted with the most recent calculations of theinstability strips for both groups of variables. We find that the newbeta Cephei stars are situated in the blue part of the instability stripand that the new slowly pulsating B stars almost fully cover thetheoretical instability domain determined for such stars. Thesupergiants with alpha Cyg-type variations are situated between theinstability strips of the beta Cephei and the slowly pulsating B starson the one hand and previously known supergiants that exhibitmicrovariations on the other hand. This suggests some connection betweenthe variability caused by the kappa mechanism acting in a zone ofpartially ionised metals and the unknown cause of the variations insupergiants.
| Magnesium abundance in main sequence B-type and magnetic chemically peculiar stars. The abundance of magnesium for a sample of 19 main sequence B-type and41 magnetic chemically peculiar stars has been derived by spectrumsynthesis analysis of the MgII448.1nm line under the LTE assumption. Thelogarithm of the average Mg abundance for the main sequence stars is log(N(MgII)/N(Tot))=-4.28+/-0.19. Comparing magnetic chemically peculiar(Cp) and main sequence stars with equal effective temperature andgravity, one finds that the magnesium abundance tends to be lower inpeculiar stars with the exception of helium rich stars where thiselement can be overabundant. In Cp stars with effective temperature ofabout 14000K, the magnesium abundance does not depend on gravity, microturbulent velocity or rotational period. There appears to exist acorrelation between the magnesium abundance and the surface magneticfield, with the stars poorest in magnesium presenting the strongestmagnetic fields. In accord with the theory of magnetically controlleddiffusion - which predicts a non-homogeneous distribution of magnesiumover the stellar surface and stratification in the photosphere - somepeculiar stars show evidence of spectral variability with the rotationalphase; the respective magnesium abundances of the HgMn stars HD49606 andHD78316 depend on optical depth.
| Comparison of the ACRS and PPM Catalogs with the FK5 in the Southern Hemisphere A comparison of the Astrographical Catalog of Reference Stars (ACRS) andthe Positions and Proper Motions Catalog (PPM) with the FK5 in thesouthern hemisphere, is presented. To this aim, the positions of FK5stars uniformly spread over the celestial sphere were astrographicallytaken. These positions were reduced in the ACRS and PPM systems and thencompared with those from the FK5 for the epoch of observation. The (FK5- ACRS) and (FK5 - PPM) systematic differences thus obtained, in thedeclination range from -30o down to the South Pole, for themean epoch of 1994.50, are shown.
| Santiago Fundamental Catalogue - A catalogue of 1105 FK5 stars (equinox J2000.0) The positions in right ascension and declination of 1105 FK5 stars, observed with a Meridian Circle during the period 1979 to 1991, aregiven. The average mean square error of a position, for the wholecatalog, is +/- 0.009 s in right ascension and +/- 0.10 arcsec indeclination. The mean epoch of the catalog is 1983.148.
| The photometric variations of the AP star HD34631 The photometric behavior in the uvby system of the Ap star HD34631 hasbeen reanalyzed on the basis of data collected over a time span of 16years. A more accurate value of the period is deduced: P = 2.20269+/-0.00004d. The lightcurves show a double-wave shape. The variationsare smallest in the v band.

| Santiago declination catalogue - A declination catalogue of 412 FK4 stars (equinox 1950.0) This catalog contains the positions in declination, of 412 FK4 stars. The observations were carried out with the Repsold Meridian Circle atCerro Calan National Astronomical Observatory, during the period1963-1968. The average mean square error of one observation (for thewhole catalog) is + or - 0.13 arcsec. The mean epoch of observation ofthe catalog is 1965.75.
| The local system of early type stars - Spatial extent and kinematics Published uvby and H-beta photometric data and proper motions arecompiled and analyzed to characterize the structure and kinematics ofthe bright early-type O-A0 stars in the solar vicinity, with a focus onthe Gould belt. The selection and calibration techniques are explained, and the data are presented in extensive tables and graphs and discussedin detail. The Gould belt stars of age less than 20 Myr are shown togive belt inclination 19 deg to the Galactic plane and node-lineorientation in the direction of Galactic rotation, while the symmetricaldistribution about the Galactic plane and kinematic properties (purecircular differential rotation) of the belt stars over 60 Myr oldresemble those of fainter nonbelt stars of all ages. The unresolveddiscrepancy between the expansion observed in the youngest nearby starsand the predictions of simple models of expansion from a point isattributed to the inhomogeneous distribution of interstellar matter.
| On the shape of the UVBY lightcurves of CP stars Light curves in the Stroemgren system are presented for 56 CP stars. Theobservational data have been fitted by a sine wave and its firstharmonic. The least-square parameters are tabulated, and it is shownthat such a fit describes very well the CP variations in most cases, theonly exceptions being due to observational uncertainties.
| Catalog of observed periods for the AP stars A preliminary catalog of the Ap stars, taken in the broad sense toinclude many Bp stars, is presented. The HD and HR numbers,variable-star names, spectral types, and proposed periods are listed;the nature of the periodic variability is indicated; and references tothe observations are provided. Companion stars, confirmed spectroscopicbinaries, and anomalies are mentioned in notes.
| Radial velocities for early type stars in six galactic regions Coudespectroscopy has been carried out for 353 stars of spectral typesB0-A0 and V magnitudes between 6.5 and 10.8 m, selected in six regions(three northern and three southern) close to the galactic plane at thegalactic longitudes 135, 175, 315 and 350 deg. The radial velocitieswere obtained by cross-correlating each spectrogram with a referencespectrogram giving an internal error of 1.4 km/s.
| Radial velocities of bright southern stars. I - 139 B-type HR and FK stars Radial velocity determinations for 139 southern B stars in the BrightStar, FK4, and FK4 Supplement catalogues and for 53 bright southernlate-type stars are presented, based on coudespectrograms taken with theESO 1.5 m telescope at La Silla. The programs, observations, measurements, and reductions are described. Among the data presented arethe visual magnitude, spectral class, mean error, E/T variabilityparameter, velocity of interstellar lines, and rotation class.
