Main-sequence magnetic CP stars: II. Physical parameters and chemical composition of the atmosphere This paper continues a series of reviews dedicated to magnetic CP stars. The occurrence frequency of CP stars among B5 F0-type main-sequencestars is shown to be equal to about 15 20%. The problems ofidentification and classification of these objects are addressed. Weprefer the classification of Preston, which subdivides chemicallypeculiar stars into the following groups: Am, λ Boo, Ap/Bp,Hg-Mn, He-weak, and He-strong stars. The main characteristic features ofobjects of each group are briefly analyzed. The rotation velocities ofCP stars are shown to be about three times lower than those of normalstars of the same spectral types (except for λ Boo and He-strongobjects). The rotation periods of CP stars range from 0.5 to 100 days, however, there is also a small group of objects with especially long (upto several tens of years) variability periods. All kinds of peculiarstars can be found in visual binaries, with Am-and Hg-Mn-type starsoccurring mostly in short-period binaries with P < 10 days, and thebinary rate of these stars is close to normal. The percentage ofbinaries among magnetic stars (20%) is lower than among normal stars. Arather large fraction of CP1-and CP2-type stars was found to occur inyoung clusters (with ages smaller than 107 years).Photometric and spectral variability of peculiar stars of various typesis discussed, and it is shown that only objects possessing magneticfields exhibit light and spectral variations. The chemical compositionof the atmospheres of CP stars of various types is considered. Theabundances of various elements are usually determined by comparing theline profiles in the observed spectrum with those of the syntheticspectra computed for various model atmospheres. Different mechanisms areshown to contribute to chemical inhomogeneity at the star’ssurface, and the hypothesis of selective diffusion of atoms in a stableatmosphere is developed. Attention is also paid to the problems of thedetermination of local chemical composition including the stratificationof elements. Some of the coolest SrCrEu peculiar stars are found toexhibit fast light variations with periods ranging from 6 to 15 min. These variations are unassociated with rotation, but are due tononradial pulsations. The final part of the the review considers thefundamental parameters of CP stars. The effective temperatures, luminosities, radii, and masses of these objects are shown to agree withthe corresponding physical parameters of normal main-sequence stars ofthe same spectral types.
| On-line database of photometric observations of magnetic chemically peculiar stars We present our extensive project of the On-line database ofphotometric observations of magnetic chemically peculiar stars tocollect published data of photometric observations of magneticchemically peculiar (mCP) stars in the optical and near IR regions. Nowthe nascent database contains more than 107 000 photometric measurementsof 102 mCP stars and will be continually supplemented with published ornew photometric data on these and about 150 additional mCP stars. Thisreport describes the structure and organization of the database. Moreover, for the all included data we estimated the error ofmeasurements and the effective amplitudes of the light curves.
| A catalogue of eclipsing variables A new catalogue of 6330 eclipsing variable stars is presented. Thecatalogue was developed from the General Catalogue of Variable Stars(GCVS) and its textual remarks by including recently publishedinformation about classification of 843 systems and making correspondingcorrections of GCVS data. The catalogue1 represents thelargest list of eclipsing binaries classified from observations.

| Rapidly oscillating Ap stars versus non-oscillating Ap stars The positions in the HR diagram and the kinematic characteristics ofrapidly oscillating and non-oscillating chemically peculiar stars areobtained using new Hipparcos proper motions and parallaxes, and our ownradial velocity measurements. We find that rapidly oscillating stars, asa group, are (-0.47 +/- 0.34) mag above the zero-age main sequence(ZAMS), while the non-oscillating stars are (-1.20 +/- 0.65) mag abovethe ZAMS and so appear slightly more evolved on average. From thecomparison of the kinematical characteristics, we conclude that bothgroups are very similar. The results of radial velocity measurementsindicate that there is a real deficiency of binaries among rapidlyoscillating stars. Presently, no such star is known to be aspectroscopic binary.
| Sixth Catalogue of Fundamental Stars (FK6). Part III. Additional fundamental stars with direct solutions The FK6 is a suitable combination of the results of the HIPPARCOSastrometry satellite with ground-based data, measured over a longinterval of time and summarized mainly in the FK5. Part III of the FK6(abbreviated FK6(III)) contains additional fundamental stars with directsolutions. Such direct solutions are appropriate for single stars or forobjects which can be treated like single stars. Part III of the FK6contains in total 3272 stars. Their ground-based data stem from thebright extension of the FK5 (735 stars), from the catalogue of remainingSup stars (RSup, 732 stars), and from the faint extension of the FK5(1805 stars). From the 3272 stars in Part III, we have selected 1928objects as "astrometrically excellent stars", since their instantaneousproper motions and their mean (time-averaged) ones do not differsignificantly. Hence most of the astrometrically excellent stars arewell-behaving "single-star candidates" with good astrometric data. Thesestars are most suited for high-precision astrometry. On the other hand,354 of the stars in Part III are Δμ binaries in the sense ofWielen et al. (1999). Many of them are newly discovered probablebinaries with no other hitherto known indication of binarity. The FK6gives, besides the classical "single-star mode" solutions (SI mode),other solutions which take into account the fact that hidden astrometricbinaries among "apparently single-stars" introduce sizable "cosmicerrors" into the quasi-instantaneously measured HIPPARCOS proper motionsand positions. The FK6 gives, in addition to the SI mode, the "long-termprediction (LTP) mode" and the "short-term prediction (STP) mode". TheseLTP and STP modes are on average the most precise solutions forapparently single stars, depending on the epoch difference with respectto the HIPPARCOS epoch of about 1991. The typical mean error of anFK6(III) proper motion in the single-star mode is 0.59 mas/year. This isa factor of 1.34 better than the typical HIPPARCOS errors for thesestars of 0.79 mas/year. In the long-term prediction mode, in whichcosmic errors are taken into account, the FK6(III) proper motions have atypical mean error of 0.93 mas/year, which is by a factor of about 2better than the corresponding error for the HIPPARCOS values of 1.83mas/year (cosmic errors included).
| On the HIPPARCOS photometry of chemically peculiar B, A, and F stars The Hipparcos photometry of the Chemically Peculiar main sequence B, A,and F stars is examined for variability. Some non-magnetic CP stars,Mercury-Manganese and metallic-line stars, which according to canonicalwisdom should not be variable, may be variable and are identified forfurther study. Some potentially important magnetic CP stars are noted.Tables 1, 2, and 3 are available only in electronic form at the CDS viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html
| The HR-diagram from HIPPARCOS data. Absolute magnitudes and kinematics of BP - AP stars The HR-diagram of about 1000 Bp - Ap stars in the solar neighbourhoodhas been constructed using astrometric data from Hipparcos satellite aswell as photometric and radial velocity data. The LM method\cite{luri95,luri96} allows the use of proper motion and radial velocitydata in addition to the trigonometric parallaxes to obtain luminositycalibrations and improved distances estimates. Six types of Bp - Apstars have been examined: He-rich, He-weak, HgMn, Si, Si+ and SrCrEu.Most Bp - Ap stars lie on the main sequence occupying the whole width ofit (about 2 mag), just like normal stars in the same range of spectraltypes. Their kinematic behaviour is typical of thin disk stars youngerthan about 1 Gyr. A few stars found to be high above the galactic planeor to have a high velocity are briefly discussed. Based on data from theESA Hipparcos astrometry satellite and photometric data collected in theGeneva system at ESO, La Silla (Chile) and at Jungfraujoch andGornergrat Observatories (Switzerland). Tables 3 and 4 are onlyavailable in electronic form at the CDS via anonymous ftp tocdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html
| The observed periods of AP and BP stars A catalogue of all the periods up to now proposed for the variations ofCP2, CP3, and CP4 stars is presented. The main identifiers (HD and HR),the proper name, the variable-star name, and the spectral type andpeculiarity are given for each star as far as the coordinates at 2000.0and the visual magnitude. The nature of the observed variations (light, spectrum, magnetic field, etc.) is presented in a codified way. Thecatalogue is arranged in three tables: the bulk of the data, i.e. thosereferring to CP2, CP3, and CP4 stars, are given in Table 1, while thedata concerning He-strong stars are given in Table 2 and those foreclipsing or ellipsoidal variables are collected in Table 3. Notes arealso provided at the end of each table, mainly about duplicities. Thecatalogue contains data on 364 CP stars and is updated to 1996, October31. This research has made use of the SIMBAD database, operated at CDS,Strasbourg, France.

| Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue. We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

| Third supplement to the catalogue of observed periods of AP stars New data on the periods of Ap stars with references are presented.Twelve further stars are introduced for which a periodic variability hasrecently been discovered or not reported in previous issues of thiscatalog. For many stars also present in previous issues of the catalognew determinations of the periods are given. Recently attributedvariable star names are also quoted.
| The outstanding photometric variations of the AP star HD 7676 = VV Scl Contrary to what was formerly believed, VV Scl is not an eclipsing starbut an Alpha CVn type variable with period P = 5.0976 +/- 0.0001 d. Therange of the luminosity variation is remarkably large for an Ap star, especially in B of Johnson's system, and in b and mostly in v ofStromgren's one. A secondary minimum appears near the maximum in B, b,an v. The main minima are in phase in all colors.

| Fifth fundamental catalogue. Part 2: The FK5 extension - new fundamental stars The mean positions and proper motions for 3117 new fundamental starsessentially in the magnitude range about 4.5 to 9.5 are given in thisFK5 extension. Mean apparent visual magnitude is 7.2 and is on average2.5 magnitudes fainter then the basic FK5 which has a mean magnitude of4.7. (The basic FK5 gives the mean positions and proper motions for theclassical 1535 fundamental stars). The following are discussed: theobservational material, reduction of observations, star selection, andthe system for the FK5 extension. An explanation and description of thecatalog are given. The catalog of 3117 fundamental stars for the equinoxand epoch J2000.0 and B1950.0 is presented. The parallaxes and radialvelocities for 22 extension stars with large forecasting effects aregiven. Catalogs used in the compilation of the FK5 fundamental catalogare listed.
| Young, high-velocity stars. I - Rotational velocities and a catalog of early-type stars at the South Galactic Pole A catalog has been compiled of 305 early-type stars to F0 and 15thmagnitude in 218 sq deg at the South Galactic Pole. Stromgren photometryand medium- and high-resolution spectra for many of the catalog starshave been obtained. Radial velocities, H-beta line widths, Balmer jumps, and Ca II K line equivalent widths have been measured and tabulated.Rotational velocities were obtained for eight distant A stars and arefound to be typical of values for normal young main sequence stars.
| Young, high-velocity a stars. II - Misidentified, ejected, or unique? The ages, abundances, and kinematics of a large number of early-typestars at the south Galactic pole are derived to examine the properties, augment the sample of high-velocity stars, and study hypothesesconcerning their origin. The results are compared to a group of normal Astars near the disk. It is suggested that at around 6.5 X 10 to the 8thyr ago, a major source of relatively low abundance hydrogen was accretedby the Galactic disk, forming young high-velocity stars that do notpartake of the age-abundance-kinematics relationships shown by otherstellar groupings.
| The period distribution of unevolved close binary systems Period distributions have been examined for various spectral types ofabout 600 (eclipsing and spectroscopic) close binaries, which are likelyto be substantially unevolved. The comparison with the previouscorresponding analyses of extensive (but heterogeneous) binary samplesallows a clarification of the extent of the evolutionary andobservational selection effects. Remarkably, this analysis reveals agreat deficiency of short period binaries (with periods corresponding tocase A mass transfer) in the whole spectral range. For the late spectraltypes, this result may be connected with postformation angular momentumloss caused by stellar wind magnetic braking; at least for the late Band A spectral range, a ready interpretation of this finding is thatclose binaries of corresponding periods and spectral types are rarelyformed.
| The South Galactic Pole - Results from uvby-beta photometry of 572 O-F stars Photometric observations on the uvby-beta system are presented for 572O-F stars within about 20 deg of the South Galactic Pole. Theinterstellar extinction near the pole is found to be zero out to 400 pcfrom the sun, in agreement with the H I maps of Burstein and Heiles(1982). Several evolved and Population II objects are identified.
| A uvby, beta photometric survey of southern hemisphere A uvby, beta photometric study of southern hemisphere eclipsing binarystars has been undertaken at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. The standardized colors and V magnitudes for 288 binaries at quadratureand/or at minimum are presented, along with an indication of theaccuracy of the standardization and photometry. Discussions of theresolving time of the pulse-counting photometers and of the atmosphericextinction at CTIO are included.
| Interstellar reddening towards the south galactic pole B, A and F type stars are observed in an area of about 400 squaredegrees around the galactic south pole (SGP) using theStroemgren-Crawford uvby-beta system at the 60 cm telescope of theBochum station on La Silla, Chile. With calibrations for B and F typestars and the provisional calibration for the stars of Stroemgren's LateGroup-A-stars, intrinsic (b-y)0 colors are derived and then used todescribe the interstellar absorption structure of the SGP. To determinethe galactic extinction perpendicular to the galactic plane, thereddening values of distant stars are averaged in order to include boththe reddened and unreddened areas at the SGP. A mean value E(b-y)SGPequals 0.019 m is derived and is found to agree well with earliervalues, except with that of Knude (1977). Explanations for the deviationare considered, implying that Knude's value is systematically too high.
